Dungeons & Dragons & RPG FAQ

What is the difference between the 2014 and 2024 D&D Core Rulebooks?

The 2024 updates (often called 5.5e) introduce streamlined rules, new weapon masteries, and subclass standardization at level 3. They are fully backward compatible with your existing 5th Edition adventure modules.

Does Thistle Tavern stock RPGs other than Dungeons & Dragons?

While we specialise in D&D, we often stock popular alternative systems and independent RPGs. Please browse our full collection or visit us in-store to see our current range.

Can I play D&D at your stores in Aberdeen or Edinburgh?

Yes! We welcome self-organised RPG groups to use our gaming tables. While we don't run official D&D events, our stores in Aberdeen and Edinburgh (opening late April 2026) are the perfect places to gather your party and play.

Do you sell D&D accessories like dice and DM screens?

Yes, we carry a wide range of essential RPG accessories, including premium dice sets, official Dungeon Master screens, and tactical maps to enhance your gameplay.

How do I know which D&D book to buy first?

For new players, the 2024 Player's Handbook is the essential starting point. For those looking to run games, the Dungeon Master's Guide and Monster Manual are the next logical steps.
