昔々、日本の宮廷で、中国の皇帝が平和の象徴としてジャイアントパンダを献上しました。それ以来、日本の皇帝は宮廷の人々（プレイヤー）に、竹林の世話をすることでパンダの世話をするという困難な任務を託してきました。Takenokoでは、プレイヤーは竹林の維持管理のために宮廷の庭師の助けを借りて、土地を耕し、灌漑し、3種類の竹（緑、黄、ピンク）のいずれかを育てます。プレイヤーは、ジューシーで柔らかい竹を求める神聖な動物の過剰な食欲に耐えなければなりません。土地を最もうまく管理し、パンダの繊細な食欲を満たしながら最も多くの竹を育てたプレイヤーがゲームに勝利します。
