How To Play Flesh And Blood - Rules & Tips For Beginners

Flesh and Blood is an underrated gem in the TCG world. It definitely stands out among giants like Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh, as it relies a lot more on strategic thinking and planning ahead, rather than the luck of the draw.

In this game, every decision you make can have an impact from the very first turn - if that sounds intimidating to you as a complete beginner, worry not! As FaB players ourselves, we’ve been in your shoes, and we’ve prepared a quick guide so you can learn everything we wished we’d known back when we started.

How To Play Flesh and Blood Step By Step

Despite the high skill ceiling, the core rules of Flesh and Blood are quite accessible even to complete TCG newbies. Here's how you can get started:

From basic setup rules and card anatomy, to turn structure & phases, learn the basics below:

Decide On The Format

Flesh and Blood comes in various formats, which can change the way you build your starting deck:
  • Classic Constructed (30–50 min. gameplay) – The standard way to play. Your deck must have a minimum of 60 cards and a maximum of 80, with up to three copies of each unique card (a card is unique if it has the same name and pitch value).
  • Blitz (10–15 min. gameplay) – A fast-paced alternative to Classic Constructed that helps beginners learn the rules quickly and gain experience. Requires a 40-card deck.
  • Ultimate Pit Fight – A multiplayer mode that also requires a 40-card deck.
  • Sealed Draft & Booster Draft – In this mode, you build a deck with at least 30 cards. Cards can only be obtained by opening booster packs.

Get Your Deck Ready

As a Flesh and Blood beginner, you’re probably wondering - which expansion sets are the best? Which heroes are the strongest? Which mechanics are the most rewarding? If you want to learn more about the game itself, check out our Beginner’s Guide to Flesh and Blood. Building a solid deck from scratch involves lots of research and card hunting, but if you’re looking for a simpler alternative, we recommend getting your hands on an Armory deck.

Armory decks are official sealed products which contain everything you need to get right into the game - here are our top recommendations:

Ira Armory DeckIra Welcome Deck

The original demo Armory deck. This is the most beginner-friendly deck, featuring many approachable mechanics.

Boltyn Armory DeckKayo

An aggressive deck focused on hitting hard and fast. Perfect for beginners who don’t want to get overwhelmed by other mechanics.

Boltyn Armory DeckJarl Vetreidi

A control-oriented deck. Better suited for players with a bit of TCG experience who are comfortable with blocking strategies.

Hero Cards

At the core of your deck & game strategy, you’ll have your chosen hero. Flesh and Blood has a roster of 20+ heroes to choose from, each with their unique playstyles and mechanics.

A hero card will look like this:

  • Card Name – The name of your action card (e.g., Salt the Wound).
  • Card Type – Same as weapons/equipment. Salt the Wound is a Ninja-only action and can only be used in a Ninja hero deck.
  • Pitch Value – How many resources this card "pitches" for.
  • Card Cost – How many resources you need to generate from pitching cards to be able to play this card.
  • Card Effects – Actions generally come with additional effects when played. All you need to do is meet the conditions, and the effect will take place.

Besides hero cards, here are a few other card types you’ll encounter:

Equipment Cards

Your weapons and equipment don't count as part of your main 60 deck cards, and you can add as many as you want, up to a total of 80 deck cards. An equipment card will look like this:

  • Card Name – The name of your weapon/equipment (e.g., Edge of Autumn).
  • Card Type – The class that can use this weapon. For example, Edge of Autumn is a Ninja-only weapon and can only be used in a Ninja hero deck.
  • Damage – How much damage the weapon will inflict by default (this can be increased during the game through other cards or effects).
  • Once per Turn Action – Once per turn, you can pay an Action Point and any required resources to activate the effect on the card.
