MTG Commander Format - How To Get Started & What To Know
Known for its endless deckbuilding potential, Commander (also called "EDH" for Elder Dragon Highlander) has slowly become the most popular way to play Magic: The Gathering.
At its core, Commander is a singleton format where you build a 100-card deck around a specific card: your "Commander". The format has its own unique rules that set it apart from other ways to play Magic - let’s see what’s changed and what stays the same.
If your deck is based around a colourless card, then your deck will be limited to colourless cards, as well as Wastes.
Your Commander is not technically part of the deck - instead, you set it aside, and can cast it as if it were in your hand. If the commander dies or gets removed, you can still recast it with an additional mana tax that grows each time.
Deck Size
Instead of the usual 40-60 card deck, the Commander requires your deck to be exactly 100 cards (including your Commander). Your deck can also only include a single unique copy of each card (with the exception of basic lands).
Life Total
In Commander, you start with 40 life instead of 20.
A Multiplayer Format
The Commander format runs as a free-for-all designed for around 4 players (though you could play with however many people you have in your group). This makes it into a much more fun experience that can be shared with a larger group of friends, and can even involve politics and alliances!
Commander has conquered the heart of MTG players because it is more than just a format - it is a social experience that tests out the limits of deckbuilding creativity, even if you’re on a tight budget.
With Magic's Commander format, there’s no need to get four of each card you need. Instead, you can easily gather up 100 different cards and build a truly unique deck, saving you the high costs of entry and letting you experiment with mechanics and find your playstyle. There are also loads of opportunities to put your own spin on existing decks.
Lots of players have also found that the broader deckbuilding in Commander can make each match feel a lot more dynamic, helping them discover some surprising synergies when they least expect it.
How To Build An MTG Commander Deck
While there is no hard rule on how to build your very own Commander deck, here are a few tips you can keep in mind when getting started:
- Focus on multiple target cards - as you will be facing multiple opponents at the same time, it’s much more useful to have cards that hit “each opponent” rather than just targeting a single one
- Take advantage of Ramp spells - these spells are what help you get ahead of opponents in terms of the mana curves, which means playing stronger, high-mana value cards sooner
Which Cards Are Legal In Commander?
Commander has a massive, non-rotating card pool, which prevents decks from becoming obsolete every year. You can use almost any card printed by Wizards of the Coast in this format, as long as it’s not on the official MTG ban list!
Some cards first go into the Game Changers list (a list of cards known to have strong game effects - maybe too strong) before ending up on the ban list, so make sure to check that every once in a while for any updates.
Build Your Own Deck
If you already have a big pool of cards, you can try putting a deck together with what you own. You can also choose to buy single cards ("singles") to find something that perfectly suits your style.
Pre-Built Commander Decks
If this is your introduction to Magic: the Gathering and you don’t have a card collection going already, you can pick up a pre-built Commander Deck. These are decks equipped with everything you need to get straight into the game right out of the box, giving you a fantastic foundation if you want to experiment later on.
